Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father was absent from the family, so she was fostered by her mother grandmother and godparents. When she was a girl, Ford was battling anxious disorders, obsessive/compulsive and was afflicted through word-related associations. Ford was interested in the acting profession during her teen years, and was a part of the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but after just a few days, decided that she would not be a good choice for this school. Ford decided to apply instead to the Central School of Speech and Drama and eventually secured a position on her fourth try. Shaun Dingwall - who later played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who - was one of her fellow students. Ford's television debut was in a 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the when she finished her studies, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared in TV programmes including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London's Burning during the Nineties. Alongside her usual stage work, Tate was a part of with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate gained recognition for her stand-up comedy that was added to her resume in 1996.
